In a trial on fertility disorders researchers found positive effect of a homeopathic prescriptions in 38 out of 67 women (57 %). Positive results were found on inducing pregnancy, as well as a number of factors that are important to enable pregnancy, including regulating menstruation (both to induce spontaneous menstruation and shorten the menstrual cycle), regulating hormones (improved concentration of progesterone in the luteal phase) and earlier ovulation.

This month sees the lauch of a new book on IVF, this time with a difference it brings together the highly specialised medical world of IVF and complimentary therapies. I'm pleased to say that I contributed the quotes on homeopathy.

Last year I was contacted by author Kate Brian of 'The Complete Guide to Female Fertility' and 'In Pursuit of Parenthood' now mother of two children after IVF. Kate was researching her lastest published book 'The Complete Guide to IVF' to include a chapter on 'Complimentary Therapies and IVF'. We discussed a recent case of a woman who had produced 14 embryos from a single harvest of 16 eggs after a short course of homeopathic treatment prior to IVF.Kate wanted to find out if men were taking part in treatment, regretably the answer was very few. Given the recent evidence that homeopathy can improve sperm density, motility and the general health of men then it may go some way to reducing the need for IVF in the first place.

I've read my copy to find that homeopathy fairs better than most therapies, the feedback from medical staff and parents-to -be is encouraging. The non invasive treatment by homeopathy coupled with its hands off approach during IVF means that the therapy alllows the IVF drugs to work without while calming the woman. As relatively low cost treatment at around £50 per month, it is affordable where acupuncture may incur a monthly bill of as much as £400 in London.

I hope that more couples try homeopathy before the embark on a course of IVF, as they may just save themselves the difficult journey through medical procedures and financial strain. If IVF or ICSI is their only hope then perhaps homeopathy will a difference to when they become parents and can start to enjoy life again.

A recent article in The Guardian suggested that couples are more likely to conceive when their love life is passionate and wild.

"Forget books, special diets and particular times of the month. Couples who want a baby should put their energy into having the wild, uninhibited sex of their early days together.

The better their quality of love-making, the greater their chances of conception, scientists say. What one fertility expert calls "gourmet sex" - where both partners take time to ensure the other has a satisfying experience - gives a couple the best chance of producing a baby.

"Couples who are trying to have a baby often mention that the sex becomes a bit of a chore, a bit mechanical and routine. That's the wrong thing to be doing," said Dr Allan Pacey, a senior lecturer in andrology at Sheffield University.

"The sex should be as wild and thrilling as it was when they first met, when they weren't thinking about babies, to give them the maximum possible chance of having a baby," added Pacey, secretary of the British Fertility Society.

Men usually produce about 250 million sperm during intercourse. But those who are fully stimulated because they are enjoying "gourmet sex" will ejaculate up to 50% more than that, according to research revealed in a Channel 4 documentary tomorrow. An extra five minutes of sexual activity before ejaculation can produce an extra 25 million sperm, said Pacey. That, plus the fact the extra sperm released are of a higher standard, means there is a greater chance of the sperm and egg fusing to create a new life.

"The better the sex, the better the chances of conception," Dr Joanna Ellington, an American expert in reproductive physiology."

Homeopathy is safe

A new detailed report from the European Council for Classical Homeopathy (ECCH) entitled ‘The Safety of Homeopathy’ concludes that homeopathic treatment is safe. Published in January, it comes at a time when patient safety is high on the political agenda of the European Union. The European Commission has recently publishedfigures estimating that 197,000 deaths per year in the EU are caused by adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and that the total cost to society of ADRs in the EU is €79 billion.

The overall conclusion of the new report is that homeopathic medicines are safe, as is homeopathic treatment by trained and regulated homeopathic practitioners.

Homeopathy improves male fertility.

Homeopaths are increasingly seeing women with fertility issues yet men seldom volunteer to visit a homeopath for this health concern. Research suggests that a year long course of homeopathic medicine improves male fertility. The key to increasing male fertility is individualized homeopathic treatment, regular consultations and ongoing treatment. This is standard homeopathic practise, treating the person rather than a named condition. By implication men will benefit from the holistic approach of contitutional homeopathic treatment. Even those who didn't complete the year long treatment, 5 of 7 drop-out patients experienced significant improvement after 3 months, including a 55% increase in sperm density, 63% increase in progressive motility, and 196% increase in the density of sperm with good motility. Encouraging enough for men to give homeopathy a try, even for three months.

Individualized homeopathic therapy for male infertility”, Homeopathy, 2002 by Gerhard I and Wallis E of University of Heidelberg, Germany, Dept of Gynecological Endocrinology and Reproduction, showed significant evidence of improved sperm density, motility and general health of men over an average 10.3 months of homeopathic treatment.
